Triumph Rhymes with Pain

Triumph Rhymes with Pain

Triumph is a mile long,

And often rhymes with pain.

It thinks it’s full of glory,

but that’s all in your brain.

It tries to leave you smiling;

Instead, you’re out of breath,

farther from the start of life,

and closer to your death.

But then the seconds lengthen.

as heart-rates normalize,

And eager-armed exhaustion,

Takes to you in disguise.

Disguised in celebration,

Disguised as peace at last,

An illusion incognito,

Over all too fast.

Then you’re set, and start again,

Which often rhymes with pain,

Except that now you’re stronger.

Your triumph is your gain.
