Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday to you!
we sang to my brother when he’d just turned two.
Make a wish and blow out the candle, we said.
He took a big breath and his face turned bright red.
Then he let it all go and blew out the flame.
He reached for the cake and we did the same.
Fast-forward the story to when we were there
in Halloween costumes in chill autumn air
ready to knock for my brother’s first ever
neighborhood night trick-or-treating endeavor.
A bright jack o’ lantern and webs on the door
left my poor brother both scared and unsure.
He knocked on the door, then stared at his feet
and promptly forgot how to say trick or treat.
Before he could hide or high-tail it away
I tried to remind him, Now, what do you say. . .
He looked at the pumpkin, and all in one shout,
he cried, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! blew the flame out.
In all of my life, I never have seen
a funnier trick than that Halloween.
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday to you.
Hide all the candles or he’ll blow yours out too.
