The Novelist’s Obituary

The newspaper said he died yesterday.

He was at home in bed. It said

he passed away in his sleep,

but I bet if you’d have asked him,

he’d have said he

passed away in a dream

and woke up the better for it.

The reporter didn’t mention it,

but I heard they found a book

under his pillow.

About “The Novelist’s Obituary”

I was reading a book and came across the story of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. The author emphasized President Roosevelt’s love of learning and reading, including the detail that, when he passed away in his sleep they found a book under his pillow. I liked the image of the book under the pillow as a symbol for life-long learning and the love of good books. In fact, I liked the image so much, I appropriated (the fancy word writers use for ‘stole’) the idea and made it my own.
