Call the Sky

If you look into the sky

and not at it,

you can see the stars

strung out in space

like so many Christmas ornaments

bobbing and sputtering

in a sea of infinite being,

some high, some low,

some far, some close—

all of them hoping and praying

you will notice them

and believe them when they say

they are more than pinprick perforations

on some vast punctured-tin lantern

we call the sky.
